An Approach to Business Social Networks
Here is a suggested approach to posting comments in business social networks. The template is geared to the ning site platform – but the same principles apply to any platform.
Firstly, double-check with each network‘s rules that you can make ANY comment at all. Usually their rules are posted on their home page and/or in their forum.
When you comment, try not to be spammy. I have seen other members of my own primary business spam my comment wall without even referring to me by name – and also, obviously, they had not read my profile which clearly states that I am in the same business! If they knew this then they would NOT have spammed my wall at all.
Always mention the person’s name – you are “talking” to them after all.
Now I have passed this suggested approach by an owner of one of the larger, more dynamic ning business social networks. She gave me a useful suggestion which I have added. This suggestion refers to helping new entrants make better use of the social network itself.
May I ask that you DO NOT just copy and paste and use the same words you see in the template. Use your own words – then neither of us will suffer with everybody doing exactly the same thing. I am sharing this template with you to give you IDEAS. Also, when you actually take the trouble to read each profile you will gain ideas to enable you to personalize your comment even further. You are after QUALITY prospects, NOT quantity. Always ask yourself, how would you react/respond if you saw the comment you are about to post on YOUR comment wall on YOUR profile.
——————TEMPLATE—————-
Hello FIRST NAME,
From looking at your Profile I see we may have a common business interest in that we can prosper only if we can add value to others. (Or whatever you can see in the profile) You can view my profile page < a href=”http://sta.rtup.biz/profile/VirginiaReynolds”target=”_blank” >HERE< /a> and learn more about me and how I can add value, if you are open to fresh e-commerce business ideas. (The html will work if you get rid of the spaces – I have placed them in so that you can see how to use html coding here.)
Also, would you like:
- some resources to help get you started here on – the business social network name – ?
Just let me know.
In any case, I would be delighted if you added me as a friend.

Then, IF they add you as a Friend – this indicates that they have sent YOU a friend request – they want to communicate with you – it is THEIR decision – they will now be more open to receive a message from you – you then ACCEPT their friend request and THEN send them a MESSAGE, not another comment, along the following lines:
FIRST NAME,
Thank you very much for adding me as a friend.
Here are the resources I mentioned in my comment:

———-END OF TEMPLATE———–
Now this means that you need to find out how your social network will help the
person on whose wall you are posting your comment, irrespective as to whether they are interested in your business or not. This is true value-adding and will lift your comment out of the spam category. Even if you are only able to refer them to the social network‘s rules (with the specific url reference) then that will do. (And, don’t break these rules yourself – I have learned this the hard way, unintentionally …)
To find BUSINESS social networks, just put “business social networks” or “social networks business” as an exact phrase match (ie in inverted commas) in Google search. There are HUNDREDS of them.
This is only one suggested approach to business social networks.
I have another approach where I request friendship (or connection) with a link to something that is free and useful eg building a list.(eg http://www.trafficsnatch.com). Then when they accept your friend request, thank them (only), wait for a while and then seek permission to EXCHANGE comments on each other’s Comment wall or Book. This works quite well too.
With business social networks you have a never-ending supply of people to approach – and if approached the right way – will become prospects for your business. Like anything worthwhile this will take time and effort. I hope that this message will save you time in having to think through your approach to using business social networks.
Now, here is a business that is worth exploring:

and you can see how I have constructed one of my business social network profiles around it here:

When you have a profile tightly focused on your primary business then all you have to do is suggest to the people you approach to read it. This is far more professional than just throwing them direct referral links in your very first communication.
I hope all this proves useful to you.

Great advice! Loyalty shouldn’t be underestimated. Too often, it’s taken for granted. In the long run, hard work doesn’t go unrewarded.
